Ein Auftragswerk des Hugo Wolf Quartetts, Wien

Das 2. Streichquartett von Dirk D’Ase ist ein Auftragswerk des Hugo Wolf Quartetts,  geschrieben für die Eröffnung des neuen Austrian Culture Institute in New York.

Nach den Erfolgen des 1. Streichquartetts (Auftragswerk des Quatuor Danel aus Frankreich und uraufgeführt an der Brüssler Oper) und Burning Day (für Streichquartett und Akkordeon, Auftragswerk des Wiener Konzerthauses) hat D'Ase das 2. Streichquartett als dreisätziges Werk konzipiert. Die breit gesponnenen Linien und immer größer werdenden Eruptionen sind bezeichnend für die emotionale und großräumig angelegte Komponiertechnik des Komponisten.

Am Beginn des 1. Satzes steht ein Cellosolo. Nach und nach steigen die anderen Instrumente ein und ergänzen, das im Solo verarbeitete Material. Das Cello stellt sich immer wieder in den Vordergrund, sowohl in den tiefen Lagen als auch sehr virtuos im hohen Bereich des Instrumentes. Kennzeichnend für den zweiten Satz ist die ausgedehnte flächige Kompositionstechnik die sich drei Mal in ein leidenschaftliches Appasionata auflöst.

Im letzten Satz wird eine komplexe Fuge aufgebaut. Beginnend mit hastigen Triolen in der Bratsche steigen die anderen Instrumente nacheinander hinzu. Die einzelnen Linien verdichten sich zu einem Klangteppich, der gesteigert durch immer kleiner werdende Notenwerte zum Teil auch hastigen Tonwiederholungen zweimal wieder in ein kurzes Tranquillo verebbt, um sich erneut diesmal geführt vom Cello in ein furioses Tongeflecht aufzubauen.  Das Werk gipfelt in einem fulminanten Schluss, der sich unisono beginnend in immer weiterauseinandergezogene Chromatik verstrickt.

Second String Quartet

Dirk D’Ase’s Second String Quartet was commissioned by the Hugo Wolf Quartett for the opening of the new Austrian Cultural Forum in New York (2002).

After the successes of the First String Quartet (commissioned by the Quatuor Danel of France, world premiere at the Brussels Opera) and Burning Day (for string quartet and accordion, commissioned by the Vienna Konzerthaus), D’Ase wrote the Second String Quartet as a work in three movements. The broadly woven lines and the increasingly emphatic eruptions are characteristic of the composer’s emotional and expansive style of composition.

The first movement starts with a cello solo. The other instruments join in one by one and supplement the material presented in the solo. The cello repeatedly returns to the foreground, both in the low positions and very virtuosic in the high ranges of the instrument. The second movement is characterized by an expanded and extensive compositional technique that dissolves three times in an appassionato.

A complex fugue is developed in the last movement. The other instruments gradually come in after hasty triols on the viola in the beginning. The individual lines condense to a rich tapestry of sound that after being intensified with increasingly smaller note values twice subsides into a brief tranquillo, only to return as a furious crescendo, this time led by the cello. The work climaxes with a brilliant finale that starts unisono and elaborates into a steadily growing range of chromatics.
